Victor Valley Union High School District offers Free Breakfast and Lunch for All Students
The Victor Valley Union High School District has obtained federal funding to provide free meals to all students in the district for the next four years, regardless of income.
More than 10,000 students at eight VVUHSD schools have been able to eat breakfast and lunch for free since school began earlier this month.
In the past, free meals were provided only to low-income students. This year, the VVUHSD Nutrition Services Department qualified for the federal Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for all district school sites.
The CEP will allow every student in the district to eat free breakfast and lunch through the 2022-23 school year, at which time the district can apply for another four years. The Adelanto Elementary School District also obtained district-wide CEP funding for the next four years.
“This is a great program because it ensures every student has access to healthy, nutritious meals,” VVUHSD Nutrition Services Director Jason Hill said. “Studies have shown that students perform better when they have access to nutritious meals. Nutrition Services is proud to contribute to the success of VVUHSD students.”
Free meals are available to all students at Adelanto High, Cobalt Institute of Math & Science, Goodwill High, Lakeview Leadership Academy, Hook Junior High, Silverado High, University Prep and Victor Valley High.
Hill said the schools are already seeing more participation at breakfast and lunch, with some sites seeing a 25 percent increase in lunch participation so far.
“We’re very proud of Mr. Hill and our Nutrition Services Department for taking the necessary steps to secure this important funding,” VVUHSD Superintendent Dr. Ron Williams said. “This will have a tremendous positive impact on our students and their families.”
